American forces hit Iranian territory in the Strait of Hormuz, just hours before midterm voting begins and as talks to end the war continue.
Explosions rocked Qeshm Island on Monday. The United States had struck Iran again. Iran's state news agency IRNA reported several blasts on the island, which sits in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil shipping lanes. US officials told CBS, the BBC's American partner, that the strikes were limited.
They said Washington was responding after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired on a US aircraft. The BBC has asked US Central Command, which runs American military operations in the Middle East, for comment. Iran has not yet given its own account of the aircraft incident. The timing is hard to ignore.
Americans vote in midterm elections that will decide whether Republicans or Democrats control Congress. President Donald Trump has faced falling poll numbers, and some members of his own party are pressing him to end the war. It began in February, when the US and Israel attacked Iran. Trump's own words on Monday sent mixed signals.
