Trump Promises Putin-Zelensky Meeting "Very Soon"

Washington says a summit between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders is coming, yet Putin has refused such a meeting since the invasion began.

Donald Trump has promised a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky "very soon". He made the announcement on Wednesday, as his administration steps up efforts to end the war in Ukraine. "I think big progress could be made," he told reporters. The timing is unclear.

Zelensky said on Sunday that a three-way meeting between Kyiv, Washington and Moscow would take place in November, hoping to restart stalled peace talks. The Kremlin had earlier said that such a gathering would be held in the United Arab Emirates, also in November. No date or agenda has been confirmed. The obstacles are large.

Putin, who ordered the full-scale invasion in February 2022, has so far refused to sit down with Zelensky. Moscow also insists it intends to take the rest of eastern Ukraine, which Kyiv rejects. Thousands of people continue to die as the war approaches its fifth year. Trump's own record adds doubt.

Putin Bets Bombs Will Break Ukraine

Russia is hitting Kyiv's power grid harder than ever. Since August, more missiles and jet-powered drones are getting through, as Ukrainian air defenses run short. The theory: freezing, darkened cities will force Ukrainians to give up territory. Researchers disagree. Their surveys find no link between blackouts, wartime stress and support for concessions. Grozny and Aleppo were flattened, yet airpower alone rarely wins politically.…

Beijing's "Taiwan SAR" Blueprint Takes Shape

Scholars have just exposed new details of Beijing's plan for a "Taiwan Special Administrative Region." At a recent symposium, they described a model borrowed from Hong Kong and Macau, yet adapted for an island with its own army, currency and elected government. Taipei rejects the idea outright. Most Taiwanese voters, polls suggest, distrust "one country, two systems" after Hong Kong's 2020 security law.…

IIGRAMMAR FOCUS
Nominalisation — converting verbs to nouns for formal register
In formal writing, a verb or clause can be turned into a noun (e.g. announce → announcement, refuse → refusal) so that the idea becomes the subject or object of a sentence. This makes the style more compact and impersonal, as in 'Putin's refusal to meet Zelensky' instead of 'Putin has refused to meet Zelensky'.
