Bayern Grind Down Atlético, Kane Waits

Harry Kane wanted new memories of a stadium that once broke his heart, and Tuesday night delivered a first instalment. The England captain, playing his first European match since collecting the Ballon d'Or, did not score, yet Bayern Munich beat Atlético Madrid 2-0 and looked like serious contenders for the final on 5 June, the venue of his 2019 defeat. Bayern were stronger and sharper almost throughout, taking nineteen shots. Atlético lasted 54 minutes before Lennart Karl broke through, and the excellent Konrad Laimer added a second. Julián Alvarez's seventy-yard attempt summed up the visitors' frustration: a shot born of impotence.…

Cunha Detonates a Comeback to Save Carrick

Two goals down at half-time and without a win in nine games, Manchester United storm back against Roma to give their besieged manager a lifeline.

Half-time, and Michael Carrick's job looks finished. Manchester United trail Roma 2-0, the fans are still furious with the club's owners, and the scoreline, frankly, flatters the home side. Nobody in the stadium expects what comes next. Then the second half arrives like a different match.

United, so loose and generous at the back, discover a brutally simple fix: keep the ball in the other half. Bruno Fernandes smashes a penalty high into the net after a retake, and the comeback begins. In the 83rd minute Matheus Cunha pounces on a mistake by Leonardo Balerdi to level the tie. Then comes the knockout blow.

Kobbie Mainoo, back in the starting XI after injury, bursts forward; the substitute Shea Lacey fizzes a pass; Cunha controls it beautifully and whips a shot in off the inside of the near post. The celebration is pure chaos. Cunha, famous for his surfing routine, rips off his shirt and dives into the crowd, earning a first yellow card. In the 90th minute a reckless lunge at Balerdi brings a second, and he is sent off.

  • Why do dramatic comebacks like this one change the mood around a struggling manager so quickly?
  • Cunha's celebration earned a yellow card and then a red. Should emotion in football be punished so strictly?
