What's in this lesson
A Level 4 (upper intermediate) ESL culture class on history. The worksheet has a reading and discussion questions.
From the reading: The River That Remembers Everything
Stand on the ridge of Ballina, County Mayo, and the River Moy unspools below you like a silver thread stitching the town to something older than memory. Ballina — from the Irish Béal an Átha, meaning 'the mouth of the ford' — sits at the tidal reach of the Moy as it spills into Killala Bay. The river has shaped life here for millennia. Neolithic farmers, Viking raiders, medieval lords, and famine survivors have all looked into the same cold water. Few Irish towns carry such a layered, unhurried sense of time.
Discussion questions
- What memory or feeling do rivers or waterways hold for you personally?
- How does tourism change a place's identity — does it preserve or erase it?
- If the famine had never happened, how different might the west of Ireland look today?
