From the reading: The Stroke of Midnight That Remade the World
At the exact moment of midnight on 15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru rose before India's Constituent Assembly and delivered one of the most celebrated speeches in modern history. 'Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny,' he declared, 'and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge.' In that single hour, roughly 350 million people became citizens of a newly independent nation — the culmination of nearly a century of organised resistance against British colonial rule. It remains one of the largest and most rapid transfers of political power the world has ever witnessed.
Discussion questions
- What childhood memory do you have of your country's national day?
