From the reading: The Cry That Built a Nation
Every year on the seventh of September, Brazil erupts in green and gold. Military parades march through Brasília, fireworks split the night sky over Rio de Janeiro, and millions of Brazilians celebrate the moment, in 1822, when a young prince stood beside a river, drew his sword, and shouted four words that changed a continent forever. The moment is called the Grito do Ipiranga — the Cry of Ipiranga — and it is the dramatic, romantic, almost theatrical founding myth of the largest country in Latin America.
Discussion questions
- Does your country have an independence day? What emotions does it stir?
- Is it fair that a prince born in Portugal gets to declare Brazil's independence?
- What if Brazil had remained part of Portugal — how might South America look today?
