From the reading: The Cry That Shook a Continent

Just before midnight on 15 September every year, something remarkable happens across Mexico. The president steps onto the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, grips a historic bell, and rings it three times. Then comes the Grito de Independencia — the Cry of Independence — a thunderous shout of patriotic names and slogans answered by enormous crowds below. Fireworks explode, flags wave, and millions of Mexicans in town squares from Tijuana to Cancún roar back in unison. It is one of the most electric political rituals on the planet, and it happens at midnight for a very specific reason.

Discussion questions

  1. Do you have a personal memory tied to a national celebration?
  2. How does Mexico's independence story compare to your own country's?
  3. Who truly benefits when a country celebrates its independence loudly?
