From the reading: The Night a Torn Photo Changed Everything
On 3 October 1992, Sinéad O'Connor stood on the Saturday Night Live stage and did something that no guest had done before — or since. She sang an a cappella version of Bob Marley's 'War', replaced the original lyrics about racial injustice with words about child abuse, and then held up a photograph of Pope John Paul II. She tore it in two, looked directly into the camera, and said: 'Fight the real enemy.' The studio fell completely silent. NBC received thousands of angry calls within hours. O'Connor was immediately, and almost universally, condemned.
Discussion questions
- Has a song or performance ever genuinely changed how you think?
- Who decides whether a protest is brave or simply disrespectful?
- How do other cultures treat artists who challenge powerful institutions publicly?
