From the reading: Druids, Iron, and the People Before the Saints
Long before Saint Patrick arrived, Ireland belonged to a world of hillforts, iron swords, and sacred oak groves. By around 500 BCE, Celtic culture had spread across much of Europe, and Ireland became one of its most enduring strongholds. The island was never a single unified kingdom. Instead, it was divided among dozens of competing túatha — small tribal kingdoms, each with its own king, laws, and identity. Rivalry between these groups was constant, but so was trade, poetry, and shared culture. This was not a primitive backwater; it was a complex, deeply organised civilisation.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever visited an ancient historical site that genuinely moved you?
- How does Celtic heritage shape Irish national identity today versus other countries?
- What if the druids had written everything down — would Ireland be different?
