In 795 AD, longships appeared without warning off the coast of Rathlin Island, off northeastern Ireland. The men aboard were Norse Vikings — skilled seafarers from Scandinavia — and they had come to raid. They burned monasteries, seized treasures, and vanished back across the water. For the next forty years, coastal communities lived in terror. Monks on exposed islands like Skellig Michael learned to build their cells on near-vertical rock faces not just for devotion, but for survival. These early raids were swift, brutal, and seemingly unstoppable.
