From the reading: The Night the Lamps Win
Ask ten people in India why they celebrate Diwali and you may well hear ten different answers. In northern India, many remember the return of Prince Rama to the city of Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile, when villagers lit rows of clay lamps to guide him home. In parts of the south, the festival honours the defeat of the demon Narakasura by Krishna. In Gujarat and elsewhere, the focus falls on Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity. The festival is one celebration, but its stories are wonderfully plural.
Discussion questions
- Which festival from your childhood do you remember most vividly, and why?
- Fireworks are loved and criticised everywhere. Who should decide whether they are allowed?
- If your country had a festival of light, what would it celebrate?
