From the reading: The Man Who Never Lit the Fuse
Every year on 5 November, the skies over Britain fill with rockets, sparklers and the smell of woodsmoke. Families gather in muddy fields, clutching paper cups of hot chocolate and toffee apples, while a huge bonfire roars in the centre. It looks like a joyful celebration, and it is. But beneath the fun lies a story of fear, betrayal and a very narrow escape that has been retold for more than four hundred years.
Discussion questions
- What is your earliest memory of fireworks, and how did it feel?
- Which festival in your country also celebrates a failed plot or rebellion?
- Is it fair to turn a violent historical event into entertainment?
