From the reading: The Night the Dead Came Visiting

More than two thousand years ago, the Celts of Ireland and Britain divided their year not by the sun's brightest day but by its fading. On the night of 31 October, they marked Samhain, the end of the harvest and the start of the dark half of the year. Farmers brought cattle down from the hills, stored food for winter, and lit great bonfires. It was also believed that on this night the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin, and that spirits could wander freely among their descendants.

Discussion questions

  1. What is your most vivid memory of dressing up as a child?
  2. Is there a festival in your country that honours the dead?
  3. Should shops and companies profit from a festival with sacred origins?
