From the reading: Chasing the Sky's Green Fire
Every winter, thousands of travelers fly toward the Arctic Circle chasing a light show that cannot be scheduled, bought, or guaranteed. The aurora borealis — curtains of green, pink, and violet light rippling across the night sky — has mesmerized humans for millennia, yet it begins 150 million kilometers away, on the surface of the sun. Charged particles from solar wind collide with gases in Earth's atmosphere, and oxygen and nitrogen atoms light up like a cosmic neon sign. The best viewing season runs from late August to April, when polar nights are long and dark enough to reveal the show.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever stayed up all night waiting for something rare?
- Should remote villages change to profit from aurora tourism?
- Imagine auroras appeared only once a century — would we value them more?
