From the reading: The City That Two Empires Built
Most visitors walking Dublin's elegant Georgian squares assume the city's story begins with the British Empire — those symmetrical brick terraces, the wide canals, the grand Custom House reflected in the Liffey. But Dublin's bones are considerably older and considerably stranger. Around 841 AD, Norse Vikings who had already been raiding Ireland's monasteries for decades decided to stay. They built a fortified settlement called Dyflin, meaning 'black pool', on the dark tidal waters where the River Poddle met the Liffey. It was pragmatic, muddy, and anything but glamorous — a trading post, not a capital.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever visited a city whose past surprised you completely?
- Should modern cities preserve old buildings even at great financial cost?
- How do Viking or colonial origins shape a city's identity today?
