From the reading: The Language That Refused to Die
In 2022, for the first time in recorded history, the number of daily Irish speakers outside of traditional Irish-speaking regions appeared to be rising. The Irish language, which has been spoken on the island of Ireland for at least 2,500 years, now has an unexpected ally: the internet. Apps like Duolingo, which added Irish to its platform in 2014, have introduced the language to millions of learners around the world. By 2023, Irish had become one of Duolingo's top thirty most studied languages globally — an extraordinary fact for a language that many people once predicted would disappear entirely.
