Export restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos AI have raised urgent questions about frontier model security.

  • Why might the White House choose not to publicly confirm the China angle of this story?
  • Is it ethical for a company to develop an AI model it considers too dangerous to release publicly?
  • How does the technique of 'distillation' change the way governments should think about AI security?
  • Should export restrictions on AI models be decided by governments, by the companies themselves, or by an international body?

China Suspicions Drive White House Ban on Anthropic's Mythos

New reporting suggests fears of Chinese access to a powerful AI model quietly shaped one of Washington's most consequential export decisions.

Two weeks. That is how long an unauthorised Discord group reportedly had access to Mythos, Anthropic's most powerful and closely guarded AI model, before the company noticed the breach and cut off the connection. That detail, uncomfortable enough on its own, has now been overshadowed by something potentially far larger: according to reporting by Semafor, the White House moved to impose export restrictions on Mythos partly because of suspicions that a group linked to the Chinese government had already gained access to the system. The implications, if confirmed, would be significant.

Mythos — along with a related model called Fable 5 — has been described by Anthropic itself as too dangerous for public release. Were a state actor to obtain sustained access, officials fear the consequences could reach well beyond commercial competition. Of particular concern is a technique known as distillation, in which a less capable "student" AI is trained on the outputs of a more advanced model in order to replicate its behaviour. Through distillation, even limited access to a frontier system could allow a rival to accelerate its own AI development considerably.

The White House has not publicly confirmed the China angle.

SpaceX IPO Sparks Tesla Merger Talk

When SpaceX closed its first trading day with a market capitalisation of $2.1 trillion — surpassing Tesla's $1.52 trillion — analysts immediately began asking whether two companies might soon become one. SpaceX now ranks as the sixth most valuable U.S.-listed firm, behind Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon. …

UK set to ban children from social media

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce on Monday that children under 16 will be prohibited from using social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and X — a list that mirrors Australia's landmark ban, which the UK is consciously following. …
  • Should governments ban social media for children, or educate them instead?

2GRAMMAR FOCUS
Inversion with negative adverbials
When a sentence begins with a negative or restrictive adverbial (e.g. 'Not only', 'Hardly', 'No sooner', 'Never'), the subject and auxiliary verb are inverted, as in a question. This structure adds emphasis and is common in formal writing.
had · did · was · were · only · never · barely
  1. Not only the unauthorised Discord group access Mythos — they held it for two full weeks before Anthropic noticed.
  2. Hardly Anthropic discovered the breach when reports of a Chinese government link began to emerge.
  3. Never before a frontier AI model judged too dangerous for public release found its way into unauthorised hands on such a scale.
  4. Not only the White House impose export restrictions on Mythos, but it also flagged concerns about Fable 5.
  5. No sooner SpaceX closed its first trading day than analysts began speculating about a Tesla merger.
  6. Not only children under 16 banned from social media under the proposed UK law, but users under 18 would also lose access to romantic chatbots.
  7. Barely the SpaceX S-1 filing been published when observers spotted the language about equity dilution and future transactions.
3IDIOMS
Define each idiom in your own words. Then write one in a sentence of your own.
  1. closely guarded (e.g. 'Anthropic's most closely guarded AI model')
  2. cut off the connection
  3. slipped through its fingers
  4. price in (e.g. 'markets have barely begun to price in')
  5. outright ban
  6. deepens rather than resolves the ambiguity
4CRITICAL THINKING
All three stories involve powerful institutions — governments, tech companies, and markets — struggling to react quickly enough to fast-moving developments. What does this pattern suggest about who, if anyone, is actually in control of the technologies shaping our world? Are there structural reasons why oversight will always lag behind innovation?

Anthropic built a model it judged too dangerous for public release, yet it appears to have been accessed without authorisation. Write a short internal memo from Anthropic's CEO to its board of directors, acknowledging what went wrong and outlining the company's next steps.
