After an unscheduled White House meeting with Putin's envoy, the US president says a sweeping agreement is close, but offers no details.
Trump says a deal is coming. He gave no details. On Thursday, the US president told reporters in the Oval Office that the war in Ukraine was "very close" to being settled, hours after an unscheduled meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, Vladimir Putin's special envoy. The president refused to reveal what the two men had discussed.
He did, however, raise the stakes. The agreement, he said, would be "very big" and would involve "more than Ukraine". It might even draw in all of Europe. Trump also admitted that he had not met the Ukrainian officials who were in the building the same day.
Others tried to add substance. Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and envoy, wrote on X that the United States, NATO and European partners had held "productive and substantive" talks. He said the aim was to address the security concerns of all sides through "practical, mutually agreed arrangements". Delegations from Kyiv and Moscow are expected to meet in Abu Dhabi next week.
