Trump Eyes Asia Tour, and a Three-Way Summit

A planned Asia trip for Donald Trump could include a trilateral meeting with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, and Beijing is saying almost nothing.

Washington is preparing a major Asia trip. Donald Trump will travel to two summits, and a third meeting is now stealing the headlines. The first stop is the ASEAN Summit in Manila, the Philippines. The second is the APEC Summit in Shenzhen, China.

Both gatherings bring together leaders from across the Asia-Pacific, and both would normally dominate the diplomatic calendar on their own. This time, they are not the main story. Attention has turned to a possible trilateral summit that would put Trump in the same room as Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. No such meeting has been confirmed.

But the idea is already moving markets of opinion from Washington to Moscow to Beijing. Trump and Putin have both commented on the prospect. Their remarks, however, point in very different directions. Each leader appears to want something different from the encounter, and neither has described a shared agenda.

No party has ever won a majority outright, so coalition talks could drag on for weeks. Arab-led parties, if united behind one candidate, might become kingmakers. Before polls opened, bereaved families stood in silence in Tel Aviv.…

Lula Wins Fourth Term in Comeback

Lula has won Brazil's presidency again. With 51.79% of the vote, he became the first candidate since 1985 to win after losing the first round. Flávio Bolsonaro refuses to concede and demands the result be annulled. His case looks weak: Lula's margin is 4.4 million votes, and both campaigns had asked for the two-hour voting extension he disputes.…

IVCRITICAL THINKING
Both the Asia summit story and Brazil's election involve outcomes that are decided partly by perception as well as by facts on the ground. Choose one story and discuss how the image a leader projects, whether through a photo opportunity or a refusal to accept defeat, can shape political reality independently of what is formally agreed or legally decided. Who benefits from that gap, and who pays for it?
