Kushner and Witkoff Meet Putin in Moscow Peace Push

US envoys carried a new peace proposal to the Kremlin on Saturday, with Ukraine visits and a temporary ceasefire set to follow within hours.

US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff sat down with Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday evening, carrying what President Donald Trump described only as "an idea for peace." Russian state media broadcast footage of the encounter, in which Putin acknowledged to his American guests that "the situation is of course not simple." Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov later told reporters the talks had been useful and had covered a range of ideas for ending a war that is now grinding into its fifth year. The White House confirmed that the two men had discussed "substantive plans for next steps" but said fuller details would be released next week.

The meeting triggered an immediate, if limited, pause in hostilities. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that Putin had ordered Russian forces to halt strikes on Kyiv for three days, beginning at midnight on Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already moved first, committing to suspend Ukrainian airstrikes against cities involved in the negotiation process the moment he spoke with the envoys. "From the moment of this conversation, we are ready to observe a ceasefire in airstrikes against the cities involved in the negotiation process," Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram — making clear his motivation was the negotiators' safety, not any goodwill toward Moscow.

Sunday's planned visit to Kyiv carries its own symbolic weight. Despite multiple trips to Russia since Trump's re-election in November, neither Kushner nor Witkoff had yet set foot in the Ukrainian capital — a gap that Zelenskyy's government and outside observers had noted with growing frustration.

Hormuz Battle of Numbers Hits Fuel Prices

Washington and Tehran are fighting over the same strait — and telling very different stories. Vice President JD Vance claimed on Thursday that the US Navy escorted 15 million barrels through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday alone; Energy Secretary Chris Wright had already put Monday's figure at 17 million barrels. Independent marine-traffic firms say the real numbers remain well below the 20 million barrels that flowed daily before the war. The gap between official claims and tracked reality is now hitting drivers directly. US diesel surged to a record $5.85 per gallon — its highest since the conflict began — while UK petrol reached 163p per litre, a six-month peak.…

Iranian Tanker Hit Near Critical Oil Hub

U.S. Central Command confirmed that at least one Iranian tanker was struck close to a strategically vital node in Iran's oil-export network — a detail that sharply raises the stakes of the incident. The location matters because disruptions there could ripple through global energy markets almost immediately. Iran has not yet announced how much crude was aboard or whether exports have been affected.…

IVCRITICAL THINKING
The US government's barrel counts through the Strait of Hormuz differ sharply from figures reported by independent marine-traffic firms. What does this gap reveal about how information itself becomes a weapon during wartime, and what responsibilities do media organisations have when reporting competing official and independent data?
