Trump Sends Envoys to Moscow and Kyiv With Peace Plan

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner carry a formal US proposal to end Europe's deadliest conflict since the Second World War.

Two of Donald Trump's closest advisers are on their way to Moscow and Kyiv — carrying, for the first time, a written American proposal to end the war in Ukraine. The president confirmed Friday that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had been dispatched, with Moscow reportedly first on the itinerary for Saturday and Kyiv following on Sunday. "They're bringing with them a proposal to end the war," Trump told reporters, adding that "there may be a good chance we'll do it." The mission represents Washington's most concrete diplomatic push since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 — a conflict that has now killed and wounded hundreds of thousands of people on both sides.

Recent months have been particularly brutal. Long-range missile and drone exchanges have intensified sharply, driving civilian casualties to levels not seen since the opening weeks of the war. Peace efforts had effectively stalled as Washington's attention was consumed by its confrontation with Iran, leaving European capitals increasingly alarmed. Witkoff and Kushner have visited Moscow multiple times before, and both were central to ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.

Neither, however, has set foot in Kyiv since Trump returned to the White House last January with a campaign pledge to resolve the conflict "within 24 hours." A senior Ukrainian official confirmed to AFP that the envoys were expected Sunday. The Kremlin declined to comment on any of the reported details. What remains entirely unclear is the shape of any deal being proposed.

Trump refused to say whether his plan involves Ukraine surrendering territory — something Kyiv has repeatedly ruled out as a red line.

Trump shakes Falklands peace for revenge

Donald Trump declared this week that he is "reviewing" Washington's long-held neutral stance on the Falkland Islands — a move that effectively challenges British sovereignty over the South Atlantic territory for the first time in decades. Argentina's president Javier Milei moved fast, announcing on national television that Buenos Aires would reopen its claim to the islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas. The two countries fought a brief, bloody war over them in 1982.…

Russia Strikes Kyiv's Intelligence HQ

Black smoke poured from two windows of Ukraine's SBU headquarters in Kyiv on Friday after a Russian strike hit the building during active peace negotiations — a timing that Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called a deliberate unmasking of Moscow's true intentions. Five people were injured near the SBU offices, and a nearby café in the popular Zavertailo chain was badly damaged, its co-owner telling the BBC it was his third location wrecked since the full-scale invasion began. Russia separately claimed it struck a cargo vessel at Chornomorsk port and a tanker near Odesa.…

IIGRAMMAR FOCUS
Inversion with negative adverbials
When a sentence begins with a negative or restrictive adverbial (e.g. 'Not only', 'Hardly', 'No sooner', 'Never'), the subject and auxiliary verb are inverted, as in a question. This structure adds emphasis and is common in formal or journalistic writing.
had · did · were · has · Not only · Hardly · Never
  1. Not only Witkoff and Kushner travel to Moscow, but they were also expected in Kyiv the following day.
  2. Hardly the peace talks begun when Russia launched a missile strike on Kyiv's intelligence headquarters.
  3. Never before Washington presented a written peace proposal to both Moscow and Kyiv in the same diplomatic mission.
  4. Not only the Russian strike injure five people near the SBU building, but it also badly damaged a nearby café.
  5. Hardly Trump returned to the White House when questions arose about whether his 24-hour promise to end the war could be kept.
  6. Not only Britain's stance on Iran angered Trump, but it also put the future of the Falklands dispute back on the international agenda.
IIIPHRASAL VERBS
Match the phrasal verb (1–6) to its correct definition (A–F). All six appear in today's articles.
  1. 1. set foot in
  2. 2. stall out
  3. 3. rule out
  4. 4. pour from
  5. 5. back (a position)
IVCRITICAL THINKING
The article notes that the contents of the US peace proposal are 'a closely guarded secret' and suggests this secrecy may itself be significant. What might deliberate secrecy achieve in a diplomatic process — and what dangers does it create, both for the parties at the table and for the public in whose name decisions are being made?

The strike on Kyiv's intelligence headquarters and the simultaneous peace mission represent two contradictory signals happening on the same day. Write a short opinion piece (150–180 words) arguing whether diplomacy can — or should — continue when one side appears to be acting in bad faith at the negotiating table.
