Trump Warns Iran: "Last Chance Before Decapitation"

A cargo ship is struck near Oman as Trump issues his starkest threat yet to Tehran, while Gaza peace talks hit a new weapons deadlock.

A cargo vessel was hit by an unknown projectile on Monday just 20 nautical miles northeast of Al Khasab, on Oman's Musandam Peninsula. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency — which monitors commercial shipping across the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman — confirmed the strike on Tuesday after the ship broadcast a distress call on the international emergency frequency VHF 16. Authorities have not yet identified the weapon or its origin. The incident has raised immediate alarm across one of the world's busiest maritime corridors.

The strike came as US President Donald Trump delivered his most explicit threat yet to Iran. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Sunday, Trump said the Islamic Republic was facing a "last chance" before what he called "decapitation" — language that goes well beyond last week's warning of strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. Trump insisted that talks with Tehran were actively under way, saying the request to keep them going had come from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Iran's foreign ministry, however, denied that any negotiations with Washington were taking place.

Trump has pulled back from the brink before. Last week he signalled that the parameters of a potential deal were already in place, and he appeared to soften his position within days of threatening to hit Iran "very hard." Whether Monday's maritime incident will accelerate or derail those talks remains unclear. Separately, Trump's Board of Peace — following a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — stated that a full Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza would happen only after Hamas had completed the destruction of its weapons, a condition Hamas has not publicly accepted.

West Bank nears breaking point, researcher warns

Hamas has accepted Trump's disarmament roadmap — but a researcher who just returned from a month in the West Bank says the bigger explosion may come from there, not Gaza. Checkpoints and road closures are adding hours to journeys under 20 kilometres. Settler flags line the roads, Arabic script on signs has been spray-painted over, and petrol stations have run dry. "It's going to explode," one resident told researcher Julie Norman. She has visited the region for over 20 years and says conditions have never been this severe.…
  • If the West Bank escalates, can any Gaza peace deal actually survive?
This is a last chance for them to sign a good document, I want to give them every last chance before decapitation.

Xi uses AI summit to send US a message

Xi Jinping stepped onto the stage at Shanghai's World Artificial Intelligence Conference on Tuesday — and immediately looked past the room. His words were aimed at delegates from dozens of countries, but the real target was Washington. Beijing is positioning itself as the partner of choice for nations caught between two competing AI superpowers. The move signals that China no longer treats AI as purely a technical race.…

IVCRITICAL THINKING
Xi Jinping chose a public AI conference rather than private diplomatic channels to send his message to Washington. What does this choice of venue reveal about China's broader strategy, and what risks does openly framing AI as a 'diplomatic battlefield' carry for the countries Beijing is trying to win over?
