Russia hits Kyiv in first large-scale strike in weeks

Overnight missiles and drones killed 13 people across Ukraine's capital, as President Zelensky cut short a Dublin visit over fresh intelligence of the attack.

At least 13 people are dead and more than 30 are injured after Russia launched its most intense missile and drone assault on Kyiv in over two weeks. The strikes began before dawn on Thursday, with reporters in the city counting ten significant explosions by 3:30 a.m. local time.

Tracer fire from air-defence systems lit up the night sky repeatedly, followed each time by the thud of detonations echoing across the city's districts. By first light, the scale of the destruction had become visible. A large crater marked one impact site in the city centre, surrounded by smouldering cars, shattered buildings, and tangled debris. Fires broke out across multiple neighbourhoods, including one that gutted a hotel on a central boulevard.

An ambulance station was also struck, leaving at least one worker critically injured. Emergency services said 34 people had been rescued by morning, with rescue teams still working through rubble at a high-rise apartment block and homes in Kyiv's south-east.

RSF Committed Ethnic Cleansing in Darfur, Amnesty Says

Amnesty International charged Sudan's Rapid Support Forces on Wednesday with crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing during their 2024–2025 siege of El-Fasher, in North Darfur. Investigators interviewed 247 victims and witnesses, finding that RSF fighters systematically burned Zaghawa settlements and executed hundreds during the final October offensive. Children were deliberately targeted — killed, abducted, forcibly recruited, and raped. …

Trump Puts USMCA on Annual Leash

Wednesday's deadline passed — and Donald Trump refused to renew the trade deal he once called the "fairest, most balanced" agreement ever signed into law. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which governs roughly $2 trillion in annual trade, will now face a yearly review instead of the six-year cycle its architects intended. Washington cited persistent trade deficits with both neighbours as the reason. …
  • Should trade agreements be reviewed annually, or does stability matter more?

IVCRITICAL THINKING
Amnesty International's report draws on testimony from 247 victims and witnesses, while the UN had already described the El-Fasher assault as a potential genocide months earlier. Given that multiple authoritative bodies have reached similar conclusions, what does the international community's continued inaction reveal about the limits of human rights documentation as a tool for preventing atrocities?

VIWRITING
The USMCA remains technically in force despite Trump's refusal to renew it under its original terms, yet the shift to annual reviews introduces what economists call 'policy uncertainty.' Write a short opinion piece for a business audience arguing either that predictability in trade law matters more than flexibility, or that annual reviews better reflect the realities of a rapidly changing global economy.
