From the reading: Order Changes What People Hear
In 1944, psychologists Fritz Heider and Marianne Simmel showed volunteers a short film of two triangles and a circle moving around a box. Almost nobody described geometry. They saw a bully, a victim and a chase. The lesson for presenters is uncomfortable: audiences build stories whether you give them one or not. If you offer no structure, listeners invent their own, and it is rarely the one you wanted.
Vocabulary
- circle back
- move the needle
- pass the buck
- set the bar
Discussion questions
