From the reading: Written in the Stars
Few things are older than our desire to find meaning in the night sky. The zodiac — a band of twelve constellations through which the sun appears to travel across a year — was systematised by Babylonian astronomers around 700 BCE. They divided the sky into twelve equal sections, each assigned a symbol drawn from mythology and nature. The Greeks later absorbed this system, added philosophical weight, and exported it across the ancient world. By the time of the Roman Empire, knowing your birth sign was as common as knowing your birthday.
Discussion questions
- Do you ever read your horoscope — secretly or openly?
- Which cultures take astrology most seriously, and why?
- What if your job application required your star sign?
