From the reading: No Invitation Required
Every August, the Scottish capital of Edinburgh undergoes a remarkable transformation. The city's streets, church halls, car parks, and pub back rooms become stages. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe — the world's largest arts festival — takes over almost every available space, turning the entire city into one enormous, gloriously chaotic theatre. In 2023, the Fringe hosted over 3,500 shows across more than 300 venues. For a city of just 500,000 people, that figure is almost impossible to imagine. The population effectively doubles during festival month, with performers and audiences arriving from dozens of countries.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever seen live performance that genuinely changed your mood?
- Could a festival like the Fringe work in your country's culture?
- Who should decide what counts as 'real' art at festivals?
