From the reading: The Quiet Storm
Cillian Murphy did not set out to become one of the most compelling actors of his generation. Born in Douglas, Cork in 1976, he trained as a lawyer before music took hold — he played guitar and drums in a band that nearly signed a record deal. Acting, he has said, came almost by accident. He auditioned for Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later in 2002 on a whim, walked into the room with no real expectations, and walked out having landed the lead role. That audition changed everything — for Murphy and, arguably, for British horror cinema.
Discussion questions
- Has an actor ever changed how you see the world?
- Is extreme physical transformation for a role ever ethically wrong?
- Would Murphy be as compelling without his particular face?
