From the reading: The Language That Refused to Die
In 2022, Duolingo announced that Irish had become one of its fastest-growing languages globally, with over four million active learners worldwide. This surprised many people, since Irish — Gaeilge in the language itself — had spent most of the twentieth century in serious decline. For generations, it was the language of small coastal communities in the west, which are collectively known as the Gaeltacht. Outside those areas, most people could recite a few phrases from school but rarely spoke the language in daily life.
