From the reading: The Day Switzerland Decided to Exist
Every year on the first of August, Switzerland lights up — quite literally. Bonfires blaze on hilltops, fireworks crack over lakes, and children carry lanterns through villages long after dark. August 1st is Swiss National Day, and while it feels ancient and inevitable, the date was only made an official public holiday in 1994. A country famous for precision watches and meticulous organisation waited until the twentieth century was nearly over before it officially gave its citizens the day off.
Discussion questions
- Do you have a personal memory of celebrating your own country's national day?
- Is it fair that small nations receive less global attention than larger ones?
- How do other countries celebrate national identity compared to Switzerland's bonfire tradition?
