From the reading: Red Rain: The World's Most Glorious Food Fight
Every last Wednesday of August, the small Spanish town of Buñol transforms into the most joyfully chaotic place on earth. Around 20,000 people — locals and tourists alike — squeeze into narrow streets and hurl approximately 150,000 kilograms of ripe tomatoes at each other for exactly one hour. By the time the church bells signal the end, every surface, every stranger, and every cobblestone is drenched in brilliant red pulp. La Tomatina is not subtle. It is loud, messy, and utterly exhilarating — and it began, almost certainly, by accident.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever taken part in a tradition that felt completely absurd?
- Who should decide whether a chaotic festival is preserved or banned?
- How might La Tomatina look to someone from a food-insecure community?
