From the reading: The Ceasefire Nobody Talked About — Until a Sitcom Made Them
On 10 April 1998, two governments, multiple political parties, and decades of grief converged on a single document. The Good Friday Agreement — also known as the Belfast Agreement — formally ended thirty years of violent conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles, a period that claimed over 3,500 lives. It was a diplomatic achievement so delicate that US Senator George Mitchell, who chaired the talks, later admitted he believed it would collapse at least a dozen times before it was signed. What surprised many observers was not that it happened, but how quickly ordinary life moved on — and how quietly the Agreement faded from public conversation.
Discussion questions
- Can a TV comedy teach history better than a textbook?
- Who gets to decide when a conflict is officially 'over'?
- If the Agreement had never happened, what might Northern Ireland look like today?
