Lost in Translation: The Glorious Chaos of Irish Slang
Grammar: Culture class
A Level 4 English lesson exploring culture.
What's in this lesson
A Level 4 (upper intermediate) ESL culture class on culture. The worksheet has a reading and discussion questions.
From the reading: Grand Altogether: The Beautiful Chaos of Irish English
Arrive in Dublin saying you are 'grand' and locals will assume you are perfectly fine, not magnificently impressive. Welcome to the delightful puzzle of Irish English, a dialect shaped by centuries of history, rebellion, wit, and the long shadow of the Irish language. Irish people do not simply speak English — they bend it, stretch it, and occasionally fold it into something entirely unrecognisable to outsiders. A visitor asking for directions might be told a place is 'only up the road' and discover, forty minutes later, that 'up the road' apparently means six kilometres.
Discussion questions
- Has a word or phrase ever caused a funny misunderstanding in your life?
- How does slang in your country differ from the formal, official language?
- What if Ireland had adopted a completely different language after independence?
