From the reading: London's Loudest Weekend
Every August bank holiday, the streets of West London transform into something extraordinary. Steel drums echo off Victorian terraces, elaborate costumes of peacock feathers and sequins flood the road, and the scent of jerk chicken drifts through every alleyway. Notting Hill Carnival is Europe's largest street festival, drawing around two million visitors over two days — more than the entire population of some small countries. Yet its roots are not in celebration. They are in resistance.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever attended a street festival? What made it memorable?
- How does a country's carnival reflect its political and social history?
- Should cities limit large street events to reduce disruption for residents?
