From the reading: Liberty, Fireworks, and a Prison Nobody Was Using
Every 14th of July, Paris erupts. Fighter jets streak across the sky trailing red, white, and blue smoke above the Champs-Élysées. The military parade below — the oldest and largest in Europe — draws hundreds of thousands of spectators and a global television audience in the tens of millions. Fireworks crown the Eiffel Tower at midnight. France calls the day la Fête Nationale, though the world knows it simply as Bastille Day, named for a medieval fortress-prison whose storming on 14 July 1789 lit the fuse of the French Revolution.
Discussion questions
- Do you have a powerful personal memory of a national celebration?
- How does France's national day compare to your own country's?
- Is it ethical to celebrate a violent revolution as a national holiday?
