From the reading: Eight Seconds of Glory, Eight Days of Chaos
Every July, the quiet northern Spanish city of Pamplona transforms into one of the loudest, most chaotic spectacles on earth. For eight days, roughly a million visitors flood streets barely wider than a bus. They wear white linen and a red neckerchief — a uniform so universal it has become a symbol of collective madness and collective joy in equal measure. At precisely eight o'clock each morning, six fighting bulls and six steers are released from a corral, and the encierro — the run — begins. The route stretches just 875 metres. Most runners finish in under four minutes. Yet those four minutes can change a life, or end one.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever done something dangerous just for the thrill of it?
- Should cities ban traditions that regularly cause serious injuries to people?
- How does your country balance animal welfare with cultural heritage?
