From the reading: The World's Most Surprising Festivals
Every August, the small Spanish town of Buñol hosts La Tomatina — an event in which up to 20,000 participants hurl roughly 150,000 kilograms of overripe tomatoes at one another for precisely one hour. Traffic cones protect the street signs. The town's population is fewer than 10,000 people. What began in 1945 as a spontaneous street brawl has since become one of the most photographed events on Earth, drawing visitors from over 80 countries who pay handsomely for the privilege of being covered in tomato pulp. Tourism officials in Valencia, the surrounding region, describe it not as a food fight but as a cultural institution.
