From the reading: Written in the Stars
Long before GPS satellites tracked cargo ships across the Pacific, sailors navigated by the night sky. The stars were not merely beautiful — they were a technology, a calendar, and, for many cultures, a contract between human beings and fate. It is hardly surprising, then, that celestial language has burned itself so deeply into English idiom that we now use it without a second thought. When a journalist calls an athlete a rising star, or a film critic declares that two leads have no chemistry — their stars simply didn't align, neither stops to consider that they are borrowing a vocabulary built, over centuries, by astrologers, astronomers, and poets who genuinely believed the heavens governed human destiny.
