From the reading: The Island That Rewrote English Literature
A small island on the edge of Europe, with a population smaller than many single cities, produced four of the most transformative writers in the English language. William Butler Yeats, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and Oscar Wilde — all Irish, all extraordinary, all deeply shaped by the tension of belonging to a place they simultaneously loved and needed to escape. Their work spans poetry, prose, drama, and dark comedy, but together it tells a single story: that great literature often grows from beautiful, painful contradiction.
Discussion questions
- Have you ever read a book that genuinely changed how you see the world?
- How does your country celebrate its great writers — statues, festivals, school curricula?
- What if Ireland had never experienced famine or colonisation — would its literature be as powerful?
