From the reading: The Barefoot Prophet and His Final Guitar
In 1980, Bob Marley sat down with an acoustic guitar and recorded something that surprised nearly everyone who knew him. The man famous for electric reggae rhythms, pounding basslines, and the full roar of the Wailers recorded a song so stripped back it was almost a whisper. 'Redemption Song' appeared on the album Uprising and featured almost no instruments at all — just Marley's voice and the gentle pulse of a single guitar. It was, many critics now agree, the most powerful thing he ever made.
Discussion questions
- Is there a song that genuinely changed how you see the world?
- Who decides which songs become symbols of freedom — artists or audiences?
- Would Redemption Song have the same power with a full band behind it?
