From the reading: Art, Power, and the Public Eye
In 2023, the Colombian artist Débora Arango became the subject of a major retrospective at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogotá. The exhibition drew an enormous crowd — not because Arango is a new name, but because she spent decades as a controversial figure in a country that once censored her paintings. Arango paints women who challenge authority. She creates images that make politicians uncomfortable. She does not apologise. The retrospective asks a simple question: what happens when a society finally catches up with its artists?
