Passive for distance

Use passive voice to remove personal agency in formal decisions. It has been decided that the position will be re-advertised.

No contractions

Formal written English avoids contractions entirely. We will not be proceeding — never we won't be proceeding in written correspondence.

Complex prepositions

Use complex prepositions to signal formal register: with regard to, in accordance with, pursuant to, with a view to.

Impersonal

Impersonal constructions distribute responsibility formally. It is recommended that all panels complete bias-awareness training.
