Is Your Hiring Process Tasting Blind?

Think of a real hiring or promotion decision — one you were involved in or observed closely. You will use the sommelier's lens to stress-test how that decision was actually made.

Name the decision

Briefly describe the role and the person who was selected — or not selected. One or two lines. What was the outcome?

What was on the label?

List up to three signals that made this person look strong before any real evaluation — university, title, confident manner, prestigious employer.

What was in the glass?

Now list up to three things you actually observed about their real capability — specific work output, a real problem they solved, how they handled difficulty.

Mark on the spectrum where the final decision actually landed — driven entirely by the label on the left, or entirely by what was in the glass on the right. Be honest. Now look back at steps 2 and 3 — does your marking still feel accurate?
