US Envoys Bring "More Effective" Peace Plan to Kyiv

Witkoff and Kushner arrived in the Ukrainian capital just one day after sitting down with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, carrying what officials called upgraded proposals.

A senior Ukrainian presidential official told AFP on Sunday that Washington's envoys had arrived in Kyiv carrying something different — and better. "It's not the same as it was before," the official said. "This one now is more effective." The two men, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, had flown to Kyiv just 24 hours after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, marking their first-ever visit to the Ukrainian capital.

Ukraine's rail operator posted a photograph of both envoys standing beneath a station sign that read "Peace Express" as they departed early Monday — a detail that was either hopeful symbolism or well-managed optics. President Volodymyr Zelensky struck a tone that mixed cautious optimism with sober realism. He said the war "appeared" likely to run into winter and stressed that only a direct meeting between himself and Putin could resolve the most contentious territorial disputes. Yet he also thanked the American visitors warmly, writing on X that Ukraine's goal remained "a dignified, reliable, and lasting peace.

" No breakthrough was announced. No ceasefire date was set. Both sides described the discussions as substantive, and both sides kept talking — which, as the Ukrainian official pointedly noted, is itself the most important part. The gap between the two positions, however, remains vast.

Russia currently occupies large stretches of eastern and southern Ukraine, and the Kremlin signalled on Saturday that it was confident of advancing further. Moscow is demanding that not only the territory it holds but the land it additionally claims be formally recognised as Russian — terms Kyiv has flatly rejected.

U.S. Envoys Shuttle Between Kyiv and Moscow

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner landed in Kyiv on Sunday and sat down with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — just 24 hours after the same two men spent hours in face-to-face talks with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The back-to-back visits mark one of the most intensive American diplomatic pushes since the war began. Whether either capital heard anything it was willing to accept remains the defining unanswered question.
  • Can shuttle diplomacy alone bridge the gap between Moscow and Kyiv?
The main thing is to achieve peace for Ukraine — a dignified, reliable, and lasting peace.

EU Flies Flag Over Greenland

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen landed in Nuuk on Sunday, making her a powerful symbol on ice that Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed should belong to the United States. She is expected to announce a substantial package of EU investment in Greenland's critical minerals, satellite communications, and renewable energy on Monday. The visit is a direct counter to Washington's annexation push, which has rattled both Copenhagen and the transatlantic NATO alliance since early this year. Trilateral talks among the US, Denmark, and Greenland were agreed at Davos in January — but have produced no deal yet. Von der Leyen described visible climate scars on Greenland's ice sheet after a fjord boat trip, linking the Arctic's melting landscape to the very geopolitical contest now unfolding over it.…

Von der Leyen connected Greenland's melting ice to the geopolitical competition now surrounding it. Does a leader's physical presence in a disputed or contested region change the political reality on the ground, or is it purely symbolic — and is there a meaningful difference between the two?
