Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models, is reported to have secured $65 billion in new investment, lifting its post-money valuation to $965 billion and making it the most valuable AI startup in the world — a distinction that had previously belonged to its better-known rival, OpenAI. The round, which is said to have been led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, is widely regarded as a signal that enterprise adoption of AI tools has reached a scale that investors are prepared to reward at near-historic levels. The company's rise is attributed in large part to the aggressive uptake of its products by large businesses, particularly following the release of powerful coding assistants late last year. Claude Code and a suite of enterprise-facing tools are believed to have driven much of the commercial momentum that underpins the new valuation, distinguishing Anthropic from competitors whose strategies have remained more oriented toward individual consumers.
Anthropologic's positioning as a safety-conscious actor in the industry has also attracted attention beyond Silicon Valley. One of its co-founders was present earlier this month at the unveiling of a papal encyclical exceeding 43,000 words, in which Pope Leo warned against the unchecked expansion of artificial intelligence. The company is additionally reported to be engaged in an ongoing legal dispute with the Pentagon after it declined to remove safeguards that would permit its models to be used for mass domestic surveillance or lethal autonomous weapons systems capable of operating without human oversight.
