Uefa Hits Fifa With 42 Questions

Forty-two questions. Eight pages. One deadline: 2 November. Uefa has fired a letter at Fifa, demanding documents and answers on everything from a failed private-investment scheme to the Fifa Peace Prize and a suspended ban given to USA striker Folarin Balogun at the World Cup. Gianni Infantino apologised last week, yet explained little. Uefa's Theodore Theodoridis insists reforms cannot replace accountability for decisions already taken. The timing bites: candidates have until 18 November to challenge Infantino next year. England's Debbie Hewitt says silence would make him unfit.…

Nassar Judge Slams Gymnastics' Stalled Reform

In Rotterdam, as world championships open, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who jailed Larry Nassar in 2018, delivers a blunt verdict on gymnastics: ten years on, meaningful change is missing. Money, medals and notoriety, she argues, still outrank children's safety. Survivors, meanwhile, urge a new leadership to listen.
  • Can a sport truly reform itself while medals and money still drive decisions?

The decisions include the suspension of Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan for three matches each, while Ziko has been suspended for five matches.

Ronaldo Banned 30 Days, Fined Less Than a Dinner

Portugal's all-time icon is suspended after walking out on his squad, while Egypt's World Cup anger lands its coach and striker in trouble.

A 41-year-old legend, a sulk that became a scandal, and a fine of €255. That is the price Cristiano Ronaldo has been asked to pay for walking out of Portugal's camp in Copenhagen, where the team was preparing to face Denmark in the Nations League. The Portuguese FA's disciplinary council has upheld the charge in full and added a 30-day suspension. The trigger was a quarrel with coach Jorge Jesus.

After sitting unused on the bench against Norway, Ronaldo accused Jesus of twice breaking his word about what role he would play. Jesus denies any such agreement, yet he kept the door ajar, and Portugal beat Denmark 2-1 without their captain. The council ruled that Ronaldo acted intentionally, breaching Article 160(1) of its regulations. Proceedings opened on 9 October, two days after the facts were reported.

Crucial details remain foggy. The statement does not say which matches the ban covers, nor whether time already served under a provisional suspension will count. Ronaldo has apologised to fans he ignored after the Norway game and to the teammates he left behind, and says he is available once the punishment ends. FA president Pedro Proença insists everyone at the federation wants him back.

Discuss
  • Is a €255 fine a meaningful punishment for a player of Ronaldo's wealth and global influence?
  • Should star players be treated differently from ordinary squad members when they break team rules?
  • Jesus denies any agreement with Ronaldo; how can coaches and players avoid such disputes over roles?
  • Is criticising a referee after a defeat ever acceptable, or should FIFA always punish it?
  • Can a national team truly function when its biggest star and its coach are in open conflict?
