Trump Claims Hormuz; Iran Vows to Keep Control

A single speech in New York has pushed the world's most critical oil chokepoint to the centre of a dangerous new territorial dispute.

At a rally in New York on Friday night, US President Donald Trump did something no American leader had done before: he threatened to declare the Strait of Hormuz — the narrow passage through which roughly one-fifth of the world's traded oil flows — United States territory. The crowd roared. In Tehran, the response arrived within hours. By Saturday morning, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi had issued a flat rejection.

The strait, he said, "will remain Iranian," and any decision to open or close it belongs to Iran alone. The statement was deliberate and unambiguous. Tehran was not negotiating; it was drawing a line. Gharibabadi's words carried the weight of a government that has spent decades treating Hormuz as its most powerful strategic card.

The stakes are enormous. The strait — just 33 kilometres wide at its narrowest point, pinched between Iran to the north and Oman and the UAE to the south — is the only sea route out of the Persian Gulf. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and the UAE all depend on it to export their oil. If Iran were to act on its long-standing threat to blockade the waterway, global energy markets would convulse within days.

OpenAI's Only Ethics Chief Has Quit

Chloé Bakalar, OpenAI's sole ethics expert, left the company last month — quietly, with no public announcement. Her LinkedIn profile still listed the job when the Financial Times broke the news. She joined in August 2024, bringing seven years of AI ethics leadership from Meta, where she shaped ethical frameworks across Facebook and Instagram. At OpenAI, she was the single person responsible for moral guardrails on language model development. Her departure follows a string of senior exits — including safety chief Johannes Heidecke and mission alignment head Joshua Achiam — as OpenAI accelerates its shift toward a for-profit structure and a potential stock market listing. OpenAI told reporters that ethics is "everyone's responsibility" and is embedded across research teams.…

CIA linked to attacks on Ecuador fishing boats

A covert CIA programme may be behind a series of drone attacks on Ecuadorian fishing vessels near the Galápagos Islands, The Washington Post has reported, citing sources with direct knowledge of the operation. At least eight fishermen have disappeared since January. The first vessel struck was the Fiorella, which left the port of Jaramijó on 2 January with ten crew members. Only two returned. The day before contact was lost, the captain's son messaged his mother to say a drone was following them — it was the last word she ever received. Washington has not denied the reports. The CIA and the White House both declined to comment.…

IVCRITICAL THINKING
The three articles all involve powerful institutions — a government, a tech company, and an intelligence agency — that deflect accountability in similar ways: claiming the issue is 'everyone's responsibility,' declining to comment, or framing aggression as policy. What does this pattern suggest about how powerful organisations manage public scrutiny, and what obligations do journalists and citizens have in response?

The disappearance of fishermen near the Galápagos and the quiet exit of OpenAI's ethics chief both raise questions about who bears responsibility when institutions cause harm without acknowledgement.
