Trump Threatens Iran's Infrastructure Over Strait Attacks

Every Iranian strike on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz will now cost Iran a bridge or a power plant, Donald Trump warned Wednesday — as both sides targeted civilian infrastructure and the global energy market shuddered.

One bridge or one power plant — that is the price Donald Trump set Wednesday for every Iranian attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz. Writing in capitals on social media, the US president said any missile, rocket, drone, or other device fired at a vessel would trigger an American strike on Iranian civil infrastructure. The announcement came hours after a fresh wave of US air strikes hit Iran overnight and air-defence systems lit up the skies above Tehran. Iran did not back down.

Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi posted on X that any aggression against Iranian infrastructure "will compel a powerful and decisive response," framing the country's new posture as an eye-for-an-eye doctrine. Iran has already been striking back: it has targeted energy facilities and desalination plants — the source of drinking water for millions across the parched Gulf — in neighbouring countries. Tehran also launched a missile strike on a Jordanian city near the Israeli border, and alerts were issued in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia within hours. The spiral is being felt far beyond the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one fifth of all the world's traded oil and gas flowed in peacetime, has been largely closed by Iranian attacks, driving fuel prices higher just as Americans approach midterm elections this autumn. Now Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen are threatening Saudi shipping in the Red Sea, putting a second global trade chokepoint in their crosshairs. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure as "unacceptable" on Tuesday — a judgment that, under international law, applies to both sides.

  • Why might Trump choose bridges and power plants as his unit of retaliation rather than military targets?

US rushes new import taxes before deadline

Washington is racing to finalise a fresh set of import tariffs before the end of this week, when the current levies are set to expire. The existing charges were introduced after the Supreme Court struck down an earlier package, leaving a gap that officials are now scrambling to fill. If the replacement measures are not signed in time, billions of dollars' worth of imports could temporarily enter the United States duty-free — a window that trading partners from Asia to Europe are watching very closely.
  • Should courts have the power to strike down emergency tariff decisions?

Iran Strikes US Bases Inside Kuwait

Iran's Revolutionary Guards hit four American military installations in Kuwait on Thursday, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. The targeted sites included Udairi landing zone in the northwest, Ali Al Salem air base roughly 60 kilometres west of Kuwait City, the southern Arifjan base, and Doha base near the capital. The attack came hours after US Central Command confirmed its 12th consecutive night of strikes on Iran, this time targeting missile storage facilities, drone depots, coastal surveillance posts, and air defence systems. Washington says more than 50,000 American troops remain deployed across the region and on high alert.…
