In 2022, Spotify removed its entire traditional HR department — the team that ran performance reviews, annual appraisals, and the standard promotion ladder. In its place, the Swedish streaming company built what it calls a people experience function, a team whose sole purpose is to make the working life of each employee measurably better rather than administratively compliant. The decision shocked the industry. Then, one by one, competitors started copying the idea.
