In 2019, the fishing village of Sommarøy, fifty-six kilometres west of Tromsø in Arctic Norway, made headlines worldwide with an audacious proposal: it would become the first time-free zone on earth. Between 18 May and 26 July the sun never sets there, and the campaign promised residents an existence liberated from clocks. Watches dangled from a bridge, a petition circulated, and the international press, ever hungry for whimsy, embraced the story with delight.
