From the reading: The Voice That Rewrote Rock
On a July night in 1985, Freddie Mercury walked onto the stage at Wembley Stadium and, within minutes, had the entire crowd of 72,000 people eating out of his hand. Queen's twenty-minute set at Live Aid is still ranked by many music journalists as the greatest live performance in rock history — not because of the production, which was modest by today's standards, but because of Mercury himself. Had any other singer taken that slot, the argument goes, the night would have been memorable; with Mercury, it became mythological.
